VAR Referee’s Mistake Confirmed in Portugal Match

A member of the Uruguayan Football Association said in a radio interview that the head of FIFA’s refereeing committee confirmed the bad refereeing decision in the Portugal vs Uruguay match.

Eduardo Ache, a member of the executive committee of the Uruguayan Football Association, stated that Pierluigi Collina acknowledged that awarding a penalty to Portugal in the match against Uruguay was a mistake.

Uruguay’s defender Jose Maria Gimenez was positioned against Bruno Fernandes late in the game against Portugal, but the ball passed between the legs of the Atletico Madrid player and hit his hand. Referee Alireza Faghani let the game continue but later resorted to VAR and, after reviewing the scene, awarded a penalty.

The referee correctly allowed the game to continue, but the VAR referee called him over and made a bad decision.

The CONMEBOL president announced that he spoke with Collina about this incident, and Collina confirmed that the scene was not a penalty. The referee’s mistake was accepting VAR’s incorrect opinion.
