Oil Prices Drop as Hopes Rise for Agreement on Strait of Hormuz

Oil Price Drop with Increased Hopes for an Agreement on the Strait of Hormuz

Simultaneously with the increased optimism of American officials about reaching an agreement to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, the price of oil in global markets dropped by more than 4%, and the price of Brent oil at times fell below $80 per barrel.

This comes while last week, with escalating concerns about a potential U.S. attack on Iran’s energy infrastructure, the price of Brent oil had surpassed $93 per barrel.

Scott Bassett, the U.S. Treasury Secretary, announced that an agreement with Iran regarding the Strait of Hormuz might be reached by Wednesday. Marco Rubio, the U.S. Secretary of State, also reported progress in negotiations regarding the passage of ships in this waterway but emphasized that a final agreement has not yet been achieved.
