The probability of Anzali Lagoon drying up by 1460

According to the results of a scientific study on the Eos website affiliated with the American Geophysical Union, Anzali Lagoon may dry up by 1460.

Anzali Lagoon, which is considered the identity of Gilan, is a place where nine main rivers reach the Caspian Sea. This lagoon is considered one of the largest freshwater lagoons in the world, hosting at least 150 species of resident and migratory birds.

According to available statistics, 49 species of fish, a multitude of mammals, amphibians, and reptiles also live in this lagoon.

The researchers of the mentioned study, considering various indicators including climate change or natural and human factors, have depicted the future of Anzali Lagoon in the coming decades. In this study, it is predicted that the Caspian Sea water level will decrease by 4 to 10 meters.

According to this study, Anzali Lagoon will at least become a seasonal waterbed by the end of this century and may even completely dry up by 2060 (1460). The destruction of this lagoon will have negative impacts on the ecology and economy of the region in addition to being an environmental disaster.
