Its threat to oil and gas pipelines now poses a threat to the world’s internet connections
While the explosions in the Nord Stream gas pipelines and subsequent events, especially Russia’s lack of clarity in accepting its role in these explosions, have significantly increased concerns about the status and security of offshore oil and gas pipelines, a serious alarm has now been raised for internet and telecommunications connections.
International internet and telecommunications connections depend on undersea communication lines, and as Russia has expanded its threatening activities in European waters and its ships have suspiciously extended their threats as far as Alaska, Germany and Norway have officially issued warnings about serious risks to telecommunication connections and have called for serious planning by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization to protect undersea connections.
Norway’s Foreign Minister has expressed deep concern about this and has warned that energy and communication lines are the lifelines of the modern economy, which have been endangered by the recent developments caused by the Russians.
